CLUB CHAMPION PAIRS
Martin Welsh, Thursday, 6 May 2010
On Tuesday, twenty eight women played three games of eight ends of three bowl pairs to determine the Club Champion pairs team for the 2009/10 season in warm weather. The teams were composed by using a blind draw and the winning pair was Rae Sheppard(skip), and Phyllis Tarbuck with two wins and a draw and a total of 7 shots up. In their first game they played Joy Poole(skip) and Joan Lemin. Rae and Phyllis started this game strongly and led 6/1 after five ends. Although Joy and Joan managed to reduce the lead, Rae and Phyllis went on to win the game 7/4. In their second game, Rae and Phyllis played Anne Sloan(skip) and D.Eller. Rae and Phyllis started this game very strongly and led 7/0 after two ends. Anne and her partner then won the next three ends to reduce the lead, but Rae and Phyllis scored 3 shots on the seventh end to lead 11/3 and then go on to win the game 11/7. In their third game Rae and Phyllis had a very close game with Betty Hernan(skip) and Tina Neylon. The score was 2/2 after three ends, 4/4 after six ends and 5/5 after eight ends. Marion Empy and Joan Hooper also had two wins and a draw and a total of 22 shots up. Consequently, Rae and Phyllis had a three end play off against Marion and Joan to determine the club champion pair. After three ends were played the score was 3/3 thus requiring a fourth end to be played. On the fourth end Joan drew close to the kitty, but with her last bowl Rae managed to replace Joan’s bowl and score 1 shot and consequently win the club championship.
