Indoor Bowls 29th July
Thursday 29th July, twenty-four bowlers enjoyed three games of ten ends. The winners for the day were George Pryor (s), Maureen Lyon, Annette Bradley and Jocelyn Hocking. In the first game they played Norma Heffernan (s), Muriel Horsburgh, Thirza Irvine and Ann Degan. George’s team started strongly winning seven shots on the first two ends. Norma’s team fought back and on the ninth end there was only one shot separating the teams. However George’s team scored four shots on the last end to win 14-9. In their second game George’s team played Geoff Green (s), Maureen Cromie, Margaret Nankervis and Willis Brown. After five ends George’s team lead 5-3, and finished the game winning 10-5. In the third game George’s team played Marion Empey (s), Kevin Dows, Margaret Warnock and Lynda Watson. George’s team started strongly winning four of the first five ends to have the scorecard at 6-1. However Marion’s team came back to lose by one shot . The final score was George’s team 8-7.

Indoor Bowls 27th July
Twenty-one bowlers played three games of 10 ends of Indoor bowls on Tuesday 27th July. The winners for the day with three games were Geoff Green (s), Bettie Brown, Alan Spinks and Margaret Goudie. In their first game they played Marion Empey (s), Phil Robinson and Jocelyn Hocking. After two ends Marion’s team were in the lead 3-2. Geoff’s team then won the next four ends and were up 11-3 and continued to win the three of the final four ends winning 16-7. Geoff’s team in the second game played Lynda Brown (s), Margaret Warnock and Ann Deegan. Geoff’s team won seven of the ten ends and finished up 12-8. In the final game Geoff’s team played Yvonne Dows (s), May Willan and P Bennett. At the halfway mark the scorecard was even at 8-8. Geoff’s team then won four of the remaining five ends to finish with the score 16-9.

Jackpot Triples 28th July
On a cold and wet day bowlers from Violet Town, Moira, St James, Moyhu, Swanpool, Euroa and Benalla played one game of fourteen ends and the second game of six ends as play was abandoned due to rain. The winners were Duncan Lindsey (s), Ken Simm and Deb Holt. In their first game they played Graham McNutt (s), Bob Chalmers and George Kennedy. Duncan’s team started strongly and by the seventh end had a 10-2 lead. Duncan’s team only allowed Graham’s team to score on one more end for the last seven ends and won 31-3. Duncan’s team then played B Diffey’s team. When rain stopped play they had a 12-0 lead. The runner-up team for the day was Peter Merkel’s team with a 13-0 score after six ends.

Jackpot Triples 26th July
Eighteen players from Swanpool and Benalla enjoyed two games of twelve ends on Monday 26th. Merv Sellars (s), John Stevens and Thirza Irvine won the day with two wins and twenty shots up. In their first game Merv’s team played Barry Robertson (s), Len Griffith and Brenda Sutherland. Merv’s team started strongly and by the sixth end they were in the lead 9-3. Both teams scored on three ends each but Merv’s team won the game 18-8. In the second game they played Brendan Rettke (s), Marianne Nichols and Joan Hooper. Half way through the game Merv’s team had a commanding lead 13-0. Brendan’s team scored on the seventh and tenth ends but Merv’s team won the match 23-3.

Wangaratta V Benalla Shield
Sunday 25th July 20 bowlers from each of the Wangaratta and Benalla Bowls Club contested the perpetual Indoor Wangaratta V Benalla Shield, playing in fours with three games of ten ends. The winning team for the day was Joy Weston (s), Maureen Cromie, Willis Brown and Annette Bradley. In their first game against Wangaratta they played Gerald McGlone’s team. After five ends Joy’s team was up by two shots 5-3. They continued to score on all but the last end to win 14-6. In the second game they played Dimpy and her team from Wangaratta. Joy’s team scored ten on the first two ends but did not score again until the seventh and the tenth ends but won 12-8. The third game they played Shirley McGlone’s team and had a convincing win 22-1. The runner-up team for the day was Joan Pearse’s team from Wangaratta. Benalla retains the shield for this year.

Mixed Social Bowls 24th July
Thirty-eight bowlers from Dookie, Moira, St James, Moyhu and Benalla clubs enjoyed two games of twelve ends in pleasant weather conditions. The winning team was Albert Green (s), W. Roberts and Barry Robertson. In their first game they played Athol Graham (s), Betty Hernan and Bob Chalmers. After six ends Albert’s team were in the lead 10-5. Albert’s team then scored on five of the remaining ends to win the game 16-6. In their second game Albert’s team played Ron Weston (s), Tina Neylon and Stan Wilson. After five ends Ron’s team had won all but one end and had the lead 8-3. However, Albert’s team won six of the remaining seven ends to win the game 16-10. The runner-up team for the day was the pair combination of Alan Campbell and Alan Rowley.

Indoor Bowls 24th July
Sixteen players enjoyed ten ends of three games of Indoor bowls on Saturday afternoon. The winning team for the day was George Pryor (s), Val Haag, Shelley Shellard and Lynda Watson. In their first game they played Yvonne Dows (s), Betty Brown, Marj Price and Willis Brown. After six ends the score was tied at 8-8. George’s team then scored well on the next three ends adding ten to the score and won 18-11. In the second game they played Marion Empey (s), Marg Warnock, K Gray and Alan Spinks. George’s team started very strongly and after six ends were 11-0. Although Marion’s team scored on the three of the four ends left, George’s team won 12-4. In their final game they played Joy Weston (s), Phil Robinson, Kevin Dows and Ann Degan. The lead changed every end in this game but George’s team scored two shots on the last end to win 9-8. The runner-ups were Joy Weston, Phil Robinson, Kevin Dows and Ann Degan.

Jackpot Pairs 23rd July
In perfect bowling weather bowlers from Swanpool, Mansfield, Sale, Wangaratta, Beechworth, Euroa and Benalla played two games of ten ends. The winning pair for the day was Mary (s) and Merv Steen. In their first game they played Len Griffiths (s) and John Spinks. Half way through the game the score was tied at 4-4, by the Steen combination won three of the remaining five ends to win the game 11-7. In their second game they played Shane McGinty (s) and Bob Whitechurch. The Steen pairing started strongly and after 6 ends were 8-1. Shane and Bob won the next two ends by the Steen pair won the game 13-4. The runner-up pair was Bob McLarty (s) and Marg Binnie with 8 shots up.

Indoor Bowls 22nd July
On Thursday, July 22nd, 22 bowlers enjoyed three games of 10 ends of triples and fours indoors. The winning team for the day was Geoff Green (s), Marg Warnock and May Willan with one loss and two wins and a total of 17shots up.
In their first game Geoff’s team played Yvonne Dows (s), I. Jenkins, Dorothy McFadzean and Marg Nankervis. After five ends Yvonne’s team led 7-1. Although Geoff’s team fought back hard over the next five ends they lost 9-12. In the second game Geoff’s team played Norma Heffernan (s), Phil Robinson, Kevin Dows and L Watson. At the conclusion of five ends the score was 4-5 in favour of Norma’s team. However, Geoff’s team then won the remaining ends winning 11-5. In the last game of the day Geoff’s team played Marion Empey (s), Maureen Lyon, Thirza Irvine and Alan Spinks. Marion’s team scored on the first and sixth end giving Geoff’s team a 19-2 win.
The runner-up team for the day was Doug McFadzean (s), Val Haag, Maureen Joyce and Jocelyn Hocking with 5 shots up.

Jackpot Triples 21st July
Wednesday bowlers from Violet Town, Moira and Benalla clubs enjoyed 2 games of 14 ends. The winning team for the day was Duncan Lindsey (s), Ken Simm and Deb Holt. In their first game they played Graham McNutt (s), Bob Chalmers and George Kennedy. After 5 ends Graham’s team had scored on all of the first five ends and lead 10-0. However, Duncan’s team then scored on all but one of the remaining 8 ends and won the game 14-11. In their second game they played Albert Green (s), Ray Keen and Rick Elkan. Duncan’s team won the first five ends and lead 10-0. Albert’s team fought back hard over the remaining ends but Duncan’s team won 21-11. The runner-up team for the day was Harry Brent (s), Wayne Neylon and John Cleary. They won their second game 21-2.

Indoor Ladies Bowls Championship 20th July
Lorna Brown and Enid May played off in the grand final of the Indoor Ladies Bowls Championship on Tuesday 20th July. Lorna started strongly winning the first five ends and lead 10-3. Enid fought back over the next 13 ends and by the 18th end the scorecard was 19-17 in Lorna’s favour. Although Enid won 2 shots on the 22nd end Lorna was the winner of the championship 26-19.

Indoor Mens Single Bowls Championship 20th July
In the men’s championship Ian Jenkins played off against Vince Viccaro. At the end of 4 ends Ian had a lead of 7-0. Vince then won the next 6 ends and the score was 10-7. Play was even between these two indoor bowlers right up to the second last end the score being 23 all. On the last end Vince scored two shots winning the championship 25-23.

Mixed Jackpot Triples – 19th July
On Monday 24 bowlers from Benalla, Swanpool and Mansfield clubs played 2 games of 12 ends in ideal bowling weather. The winning team for the day was Rod Mildrem (s) Vie Smith and Gwen Mildrem with 2 wins and 7shots up in the second game. In the first game they played Martin Welsh (s) Lynda Wilson and Lyn Hickey. After 5 ends Martin’s team was leading 5-1. However Rod’s team fought back and won the next 7 ends and went on to win the game 13-6. In their second game they played Merv Sellars (s), Dorothy McFazdean and Len Griffith. Merv’s team won the first 2 ends but Rod’s team fought back scoring 5 shots on the 10th end and then going onto win the game 14-7. The runner-up was Martin Welsh’s team with 16-6 win in their second game.
